We are seeking care for Casey (46) who has advanced ALS. This will be in our apartment by Lake Merrit in Oakland where he lives with his wife and 6 yr old. We are currently seeking help for various periods: morning and evening and sometimes weekend shifts and are open to hiring someone to cover all or hiring multiple people who each cover some. We have a spare bedroom and are open to a live-in arrangement for the right person. Work often involves: Preparing medicine Using feeding tube to provide Casey his food and meds Hygiene (shaving, face washing, occasional haircut with clippers, weekly showers) Lung therapy and Oral hygiene using a cough assist machine, mouth swabs, sometimes a suction, vest and nebulizer Transfer support using a ceiling lift or pivot board Toileting support and cleaning (requires assistance for BM), Condom catheter removal and replacement Body adjustments in chair and bed Light housework More than anything, we need someone who is reliable and who can interact with Casey respectfully. His tongue doesn't work but his mind does. He needs someone who will take time to ask yes or no questions and wait for (a sometimes subtle) answer before proceeding with anything. Casey still works full time (at an environmental NGO) using a speech neuroprosthesis and has an Executive Assistant during the day. We may eventually be looking for a day-time personal attendant to support both of them.
