I saw my father go through the aging process and coming from a family-centered culture where care for the elderly is strictly a family affair, the responsibility fell on me. With my dad, I learnt on the job that personal needs such as nutrition, medical needs and hobbies change with the aging process and most importantly, even if they have come to depend on you for most of their needs, you had to gain their trust and independence, dignity and privacy had to be respected. I enjoy being a care giver because it gives me the opportunity to meet wonderful people and get to know the wonderful lives they have lived. It gives an opportunity for human appreciation. You get to understand that your client is not just a statistic but a former or retired teacher, professor, engineer or chemist who has given their service to society. As a professional care giver, I am proud to say that everyone I have ever worked with whether employer or client is never happy to see me go because I go above and beyond expectation and I am able to build and gain the trust of my clients making them more relaxed to lead life as independently as possible. Presently, I am a student at the George Washington University studying public health via the online program and as a mother of two very active young boys, who is responsible for catering for their needs, I can say confidently that I am in health and personal care field for the long haul and you can count on me. I became a caregiver after the death of my dad in 2012. I cared for him and also used a service to help me. I wanted someone to care for my dad as I cared for him. I care for my mom now and other seniors I have come to love. The elderly are so special and being able to bring them some joy and happiness is rewarding to me.
