About Ellen

It has been my privilege to lovingly care for elderly people with dementia, starting with my mother-in-law. I enjoy entering their world and showing them the dignity, respect and gentle care our elders should have. I have become the trusted companion of each person I’ve cared for, and have served several of them for years at a time. Support for the family of the person I am companion to is a special part of my ministry. I am currently a part-time seminary student and simply love people. My desire is to bring joy and wisdom in caregiving to those I serve.

All of my caregiving has been with dear people who are older and have dementia. A number of my caregiving assignments have lasted for multiple years. The first woman I cared for the last 4 years of her life. I was with another woman for over 2 years. I cared for another woman the last 2 1/3 years of her life. Currently, I am caring for a couple part-time; the gentleman has dementia. I am a researcher, and have learned much from gerontologists, social workers, nurses, hospice nurses and other staff, books, videos offered by the county department of aging, and communities of caregivers. While I don't have formal credentials, I helped coordinate care for one woman, and trained other caregivers.

I truly enjoy being a caregiver and think of it as more than just a job; it's a dedicated lifestyle. I choose NOT to get my CNA license because it would tie my hands. I would not be able to do wound care, catheter changes, g-tube feedings and changes, medication dosage, administration, and set ups, insulin shots, or most of what I have done for my hospice clients. I have been trained by various Drs, nurses, hospice staff, CNAs, wound care specialists, and staff at The Rehab Institute of Chicago. I choose to learn and take everything I've learned to better my client's life, for as long as I can.
