About April L

Becoming a caregiver grew from my personal experience of caring for my grandfather. My grandfather built his home with his own hands and all he wanted was to live out his life in it. Watching him become less capable to care for himself and his house quickly became the driving force behind my overpowering desire to help seniors stay in their homes. Think of me like a multi tasking personal life assistant! What is that you ask? Well...... not only can I provide assistance with daily living tasks, but I can also assist with all aspects of household management. I can accompany you to appointments, be an advocate by your side, a voice for you, or just help you by listening and taking notes. I can help you run errands, food shop & track and manage household management tasks like maintenance & repairs. One day I may be fixing the dishwasher, the next day I'm correlating all your upcoming medical appointments and family visits. I believe that our age should not dominate our lives, how old we are does not determine who we are. I will do anything I can to help someone continue living in their home, because I believe if that's what they wish, then they deserve a chance. Aging in place is a realistic and viable option that we should always consider.

Mrs. Martin is living independently in her home. In 2014 I was referred to Mrs. & Mr. Martin by a hospice nurse who at the time had been Mr. Martin's visiting nurse. Alongside Mrs. Martin I helped care for her husband who suffered from Parkinson's disease up until when he sadly passed June 2016. As well with any other tasks and errands they needed done. Since Mr. Martin passed I've become Mrs. Martin's care partner. On a daily basis I assist Mrs. Martin will any duties related to maintaining her home. I also take Mrs. Martin grocery shopping and out to run all her other errands. I manage her prescription refills and assist with managing her weekly pill box. I help make all medical appointments, I accompany her to her appointments and act as her advocate during appointments. This is important as Mrs. Martin is living with dementia, I make sure she understands the doctors and gets her questions answered etc.

My first job, at age 10, was summer companion to my maternal grandmother. Working for the family matriarch required abundant labor (my grandmother was elderly), but the daily chores gave rise to an unexpected pleasure; I liked being responsible. For 12 lovely summers, I cleared the acorns from her croquet court, hiked to the store to buy her groceries, and delivered her (she did not drive) by rowboat to tea at the homes of neighbors. Within the formality of her cottage, I learned to be a responsible member of a household. And whether I felt like it or not, I learned to be good company. Still under my grandmother's spell, I have worked as a lady's companion and as a gentleman's secretary for more than 20 years. Although I am no longer gathering acorns, I accompany my employers on their travels, keep them company at cultural events, edit their memoirs, and teach them them how to draw and paint. I have found these employments to be congenial and remunerative. They give me great pleasure.
