I became a Caregiver because I needed the certification for another job that I thought I would be well suited for. I thought I would fair out well as a Lab Tech for one of the local mental hospitals. Not long after I'd graduated from the CNA program and had begun working as a Lab Tech in the hospital clinic, I discovered the hospital was due to close in less than a year ; there were no openings at any of the sister branches. I took a job with a visiting nurse agency as a Phlebotomist / CNA. Although they had more CNA work than Phlebotomy, I needed a job and lacked experience. The job also offered a year long course in disease management coaching and had good benefits. As time passed, I began to work in other areas of caregiving to see what my specialty might be and decided I liked working with seniors; they seemed to have tons of life experience and didn't mind sharing it ( I often found myself wondering if should've been paying them for all they taught me - important things about life I never even thought of !), They seemed to really appreciate anything I did for them. I find the intrinsic value of serving the elders rewarding. Since discovering what my passion is, I've done nothing else.
