Hello! I'm Des I've been employed in the health field for about a year now. Prior to that I was home with my grandmother who had multiple myeloma, I cared for her & helped her do everyday activities. Those things included taking her to doctor appointments, toileting, showering, preparing food and activities she liked to do during the day but my favorite part about it was spending time with her. After I spent the 1 1/2 caring for her I realized that being a caregiver is what I wanted to do, I love that I am able to help someone achieve the things that they are still capable of. I love to see them happy after they get done doing something. Some important things that I've taken in from working in assisted living is compassion, positive reinforcement & queing in a way that makes them feel like they have the power to accomplish anything. Keeping the happy and making them feel loved is the most important for me.

At Berkshire Commons I help multiple residents get ready for the day in the morning. Not all residents need help but the ones that do are sure to get it, breakfast is served from 7:30-10:00 in the morning so they are usually up between those hours. After breakfast residents usually go back to their rooms & B&B's are done after. The activities staff comes around 10:30 and a handful of them go to activities & exercise. Throughout the day we also do room checks giving them fresh linens & collecting their trash. There is a shower schedule we go by and there are usually 2-4 residents that get a shower on a scheduled day. On those days we also do their laundry, nails, and wash their linens. Usually after room checks we are also responsible for washing all of the dirty towels, wash cloths & hand towels as well as sheets & stuff belonging to the building. We chart using paper charts in a binder to make sure all is done & we leave knowing we did what was needed that day for residents.

I will provide a relaxing, stimulating environment where they will feel safe. All the while making sure their daily needs are met. Providing nutrious meals and snacks is also important. I have specialized knowledge of Altzeimers and dementia. I have no problem giving insulin shots or morphine as I worked in hospice care. I am single with my son grown up. I have a very flexible schedule yet do make time for myself. I keep Sundays free for church and family. I prefer to work day hours, but will work some evenings if needed. I can only help your loved one if they are able to be mobile as I have a lifting restriction. I can assist someone in and out and up and down, but not if I have to lift.
