I first began in caregiving after my nephew and my sister moved from GA. My nephew had special needs that included a gastrointestinal tube, a tracheotomy tube, was non-verbal, and non-mobile. All of his care was done by nurses, and on rare occasions - me. I fell in love with caring for people and helping them live their best life. Although my nephew has passed on, I still feel strongly that he led me to a career path that means the most to me. His lack of verbal ability did not, in any way, restrict him from communicating. He used facial expressions, which were amusing at times, that made his feelings perfectly clear. He taught me how to care for someone that couldn't tell you what they needed in a "traditional way". I consider being able to determine what he needed without verbal communication a personal accomplishment.
