My kids are in college or have graduated college. I have spent most of my life taking care of elderly and my family. I went to PSU and later transferred to Bassist design. I should have gone into nursing, I have always had compassion for people and people in need of assistance. Before I got married, I lived with an elderly couple in Lake Oswego, that happened to be my Great Uncle Clarence and Great Aunt Ada whom needed assistance with cooking, cleaning, shopping and transferring. Aunt Ada had a stroke, so I was there for support with transfers, standby showers and pretty much anything she might need- Medication reminders , help painting her fingernails and helping her with her hair. I met my husband at PSU, we got married and had 5 amazing kids. I have spent my life during marriage raising our kids and taking care of my mother whom had a stroke at 65 and was in an assisted care home. I would go 3-4 times a week and help her with her occupational and physical therapy exercises, as well as taking her shopping and helping her with what she needed. My mom passed away almost 2 years ago Jan. The last 5 years I tag teamed with my Nana who was in her 90's and helped her with everything she needed. Trips to the store, cleaning, grocery shopping, cooking , doctors appointments etc. My Nana lived to be almost 104. Her last few years of her life she had dementia, which I learned so much about during those years. How you join "their world"and don't argue something, you know, to not be true, unless it's harmful to them. It's a very trying time having your loved one slip away into "their land"and they might seem like they do not know who you are, it's really much harder on the family than the patient. I look forward to helping your loved one thru patience, compassion, understanding, helping them with all their needs, giving them the feeling of independence in their own home.
Caregivers that work non-full-time jobs or irregular shifts can negotiate extra compensation in addition to their standard hourly wage.
